The AFL has taken a stand, defending its decision to shake up the finals series with a new wildcard round, set to include 10 clubs. The proposed format sees the 7th and 10th-placed teams battle it out in a do-or-die final, while the 8th and 9th-placed teams get a chance to extend their season. Meanwhile, the top 6 sides enjoy a well-deserved week off. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon believes this provides 'opportunities and hope' for fans, emphasizing the popularity of finals games and their high attendance and TV ratings.
However, critics argue that this expansion dilutes the significance of regular-season performance. The AFL Fans Association (AFLFA) survey revealed a staggering 77% of fans oppose the wildcard round, concerned about rewarding mediocrity and undermining the fairness of the competition.
"Fans want a fair game," says AFLFA President Ron Issko. "The wildcard proposal raises questions about the integrity of the fixture and scheduling."
The wildcard round represents the most significant change to the finals series since the introduction of the pre-finals bye in 2016. This move has also impacted the AFLW, as the women's league will now overlap with the AFL finals series, losing the dedicated space it had previously enjoyed.
Dillon acknowledges the importance of the AFLW, but maintains that the two competitions can coexist successfully.
"We believe this is a natural progression, and it allows us to celebrate AFLW throughout October and November," he adds.
